Legally registered as Musasa Project in 1991, Musasa is a leading women’s organization that started work in 1988 as the first ever organization in Zimbabwe focusing on Violence against Women, (VAW). Musasa is one of the organizations that genuinely represents grassroots women and has a long history of working at community level even in the very remote areas. Musasa also has extensive experience and track record in working on issues of gender-based violence (GBV) both at local and national level and in the process of creating and/or strengthening community-based structures that support programming and response at community level. Musasa focuses on 6 key areas of expertise and main strategic pillars namely Direct services, Prevention, Advocacy and Communication, Monitoring, Research and Evaluation, Staff Wellbeing and Development. With its head office situated in Harare, the organisation operates 5 Regional offices in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Masvingo and Mutare, 14 Safe shelters across the provinces, 9 district offices and various mobile one stop centre clinics in many parts of the country. Through its Direct services pillar, Musasa aims at increasing access to GBV services through the shelters, call centre, mobile and static One stop Centres. Under prevention the organisation facilitates social transformation at household, community and national level promoted by addressing retrogressive beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours while the advocacy pillar focuses on addressing gaps in GBV legislation through advocating for formulation of new laws, the revision of laws to align them to the new constitution and full implementation of existing laws. The organisation’s advocacy initiatives culminated in the passing of the Domestic Violence Act in 2007.
Musasa’s long-term presence in the targeted districts has given the organization an understanding of the context as well as the gaps in terms of programming and geographical coverage. Over the years, Musasa has accumulated significant experience through partnerships with government bodies, non-governmental organizations, donors (UNFPA, UKAID, USAID, Oxfam, Troicare, European Union, Netherlands Embassy), and other local NGOs. It stands out as one of the few organisations with a long-term national MOU with the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community Small and Medium Enterprise Development. Musasa works closely with relevant government stakeholders responsible for GBV prevention and response, such as the Department of Social Development, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Women's Affairs, the Victim Friendly Unit, Ministry of Health and the Judicial Service Commission as well as local community-based organizations and non-governmental organizations embedded within the target districts
The organisation has a dedicated team of 7 board members and 115 staff members, encompassing volunteers and interns, across various areas of expertise. The organisation has a structure with a clear flow of roles and responsibilities and is led by the executive director and senior management, who are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization. Management led by the executive director is answerable to the non-executive board which consists of 7 members and is led by the Board chairperson. Their duty is to oversee the operations of the organization in a non-executive capacity.
